Instagram is one of the most popular photo-sharing social networks. The application launched in 2010 and has since grown to over 300 million users. The question is…what does Instagram mean? How do you pronounce it?
According to Instagram’s FAQ, the original inspiration for the name came from two sources: old cameras and telegrams.
When we were kids, we loved playing around with cameras. We loved how different types of old cameras marketed themselves as “instant” – something we take for granted today. We also felt that the snapshots people were taking were kind of like telegrams in that they got sent over the wire to others – so we figured why not combine the two?
What Does Instant Mean?
The word instant means happening or coming immediately. Words similar to instant include immediate, instantaneous, rapid, quick, and swift.
That camera prints the photos in an instant.
When I walked into the office, I instantly knew I wanted to work there.
What is a Telegram?
A telegram is a brief message transmitted by using an electronic device. In the 19th and early 20th century, telegrams were the primary mode of communication over long distances. The device that sent messages was called a telegraph, while the message itself was called a telegram.
