Hopefully, you know what Facebook is! With over 1.7 billion users, Facebook is the largest social network on the planet. In this post, we’ll briefly talk about the origin and meaning of the name Facebook as well as the correct way to pronounce it.
The predecessor to Facebook was called Facemash. It was created by Mark Zuckerberg, one of the founders of Facebook (and current CEO), while he was a student at Harvard.
You can read more about Facemash on Wikipedia, but in short, FaceMash used pictures of students on the websites of various Harvard Houses. These websites were informally called “facebooks,” as they were a book, or directory, of faces [of students]. Many high schools, prep schools, and universities in the United States have yearbooks, which are essentially the same thing.
A few months later, Zuckerberg expanded on the Facemash concept and created Thefacebook, which grew and eventually turned into the current website. In 2005, the company became simply Facebook after purchasing Facebook.com.
Finally, let’s talk about the pronunciation of Facebook. Thankfully, it’s pretty easy. The pronunciation is simply the combination of the words face and book. Thus, face-book:
The individual pronunciation of each word does not change when combined into one word.
