Entrepreneur is a pretty tricky word, even for native English speakers.
What’s an Entrepreneur?
An entrepreneur is an individual that starts, organizes, and operates a business. The term startup founder is related, but it has a slightly different meaning.
Why Does the Word Look French?
Well, because it is! The word is derived from a French word meaning “to undertake.” So, an entrepreneur is “one that undertakes the founding and operation of a business.”
How Do You Pronounce It?
Here’s where it gets tricky. There are two commonly used pronunciations. One is an “official” pronunciation, while the other is not official, but is still very widely used.
The good news is that these two pronunciations are extremely similar to each other.
The “official” pronunciation is AHN-TREH-PREH-NERR. Notice the nerrr sound at the end of the word:
The other commonly-used pronunciation is AHN-TREH-PREH-NOOR
The noor sound at the end of the word is different than the nerr sound in the first pronunciation.
Which One Should You Use?
As I mentioned above, both of these pronunciations are widely used. Both are thought of as “standard” or “correct” by an average American English speaker.
But, if you have to pick one, go with the first pronunciation.
